Associates In Surgical Technology Programs

Surgical technology is critical part of the patient care spectrum. Surgical technologists prepare the operating room for use, maintain a sterile environment, hand instruments to the surgeon, and assist with patient care. Surgeons need the assistance of qualified and highly trained professionals to ensure the patient’s well-being.

An associate degree in surgical technology provides the training necessary to assist in an operating room. You’ll learn how to set up surgical instruments and equipment, and how to maintain a safe environment for patients undergoing surgery. An Associate of Applied Science (AAS) is often the entry-level requirement for a career in this field. Most programs cover such topics as anatomy, biology, medical terminology, pharmacology, equipment sterilization, and patient safety and care.

Upon graduation, you’ll be prepared to serve as a member of a surgical team. It often takes 18 months to two years to complete an associate degree in surgical technology. Some programs prepare graduates to take an examination administered by the Association of Surgical Technologists to achieve the status of Certified Surgical Technologist.
